Japanese vs English Pokémon Cards: Which Should You Collect?

Japanese and English Pokémon cards share most of the same artwork, but they feel different to collect. Here's how they compare.

Release Timing

Japanese sets come out first, usually a few months before the English version. If you want the newest cards as soon as they exist, Japanese is the way to get them. For example, the English set Delta Reign is the English version of the Japanese set Storm Emeralda.

Set Size and Packs

Japanese sets are often smaller, and many English sets combine cards from more than one Japanese set. Japanese booster packs usually hold fewer cards and cost less per pack.

Print Quality and Look

Many collectors prefer Japanese cards for their print quality and centering. Card stock, holo patterns and borders can also differ between the two languages, so the same card can look a little different side by side.

Playing the Game

If you play in official tournaments in the US, you'll need English cards. Japanese cards are mostly for collecting.

Value

Both languages hold value. English cards often have more buyers in the US, while some Japanese-exclusive cards and promos are only available in Japanese.

Our Take

Collect what you enjoy. Many collectors keep an English binder for their favorite sets and pick up Japanese cards for art they love.
